
Skin "detox" and charcoal
The claim
Masks, cleansers and charcoal products draw toxins and impurities out of the skin.
What the evidence actually shows
Two problems, one empirical and one structural.
Empirically, a review of cosmetic uses of activated charcoal concluded there is little to no clinical evidence for its cosmetic claims - blemishes, oily or dry skin, acne - and that the claims are extrapolated from charcoal's genuine use in gastrointestinal poisoning, where it adsorbs substances in the gut lumen. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review's literature compilation on cosmetic charcoal addresses safety and its function as a colourant and adsorbent, and contains no substantiation of transdermal toxin removal, which is not a recognised cosmetic function.
Structurally, the premise inverts how skin works. The stratum corneum exists to keep things out. It is not an excretory organ - elimination happens through the liver, kidneys, gut and lungs. Sweat is thermoregulation, not detoxification. So there is no established mechanism by which a topical product could draw a systemic toxin outward, and the broader detox literature offers no support either: a critical review in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics found no randomised controlled trials of commercial detox regimens and no evidence that identifiable toxins accumulate and require external removal.
Charcoal does adsorb oil and surface debris, which is a real if unremarkable cleansing action. That is a different and much smaller claim than detoxification.
What to do instead
If the goal is less surface oil and fewer blocked pores, a salicylic acid product has a mechanism and evidence. If it is a clean face, any adequate cleanser works. Charcoal is fine as a cleansing ingredient and meaningless as a detoxifier.
