Stabilizing Chlorine Dioxide in Powder Form

Last updated:

Chlorine dioxide is a strong, selective oxidizing disinfectant that is hard to handle because it is an unstable gas. Vetpure Disinfectant encapsulates its precursors in a stabilized powder, so ClO2 forms only on dissolution, at 98% purity or higher, and the solution remains stable for up to one month.

The handling problem

ClO2 cannot be compressed and shipped as a gas because it decomposes explosively at high concentration in air. Most users generate it on site from sodium chlorite with acid or chlorine, which requires equipment, trained staff and careful control. Poorly controlled generation leaves unreacted chlorite, chlorate or free chlorine in the product, lowering purity and adding by-products. Two-part kits simplify this but still depend on correct mixing and short use windows.

How encapsulation solves it

In Vetpure Disinfectant, the reacting components are held in separate nano-encapsulated compartments within a dry powder. In dry storage they cannot react. When the powder dissolves in water, the shells open and the reaction proceeds in a controlled way to yield chlorine dioxide at 98% purity or more. Because the product forms ClO2 rather than hypochlorous acid, the solution does not chlorinate organic matter and does not form trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids or haloacetonitriles.

Why purity and stability matter

High purity means dose accuracy: the concentration you prepare is the concentration of oxidant present, not a mix of chlorite and chlorine. Solution stability up to one month means users can prepare working batches rather than mixing daily. For drinking water lines and terminal cleandown, that reduces preparation error, the most common failure point in farm disinfection. It also allows accurate dosing into medicator systems for water lines, where concentration must stay inside regulatory limits for animal drinking water, and it reduces operator contact with reactive chemicals during preparation.

Key facts

How our delivery technology applies

Encapsulation separates reactive precursors until dissolution, which is what turns an on-site generation process into a shelf-stable powder. The shells control the reaction rate on dissolution, which drives the high conversion to ClO2 and the low residual chlorite and chlorine. The same compartment approach allows tablet and sachet formats for water and surface use.
