
Is geraniol safe for cats?

The short answer
Handle the concentrate with care. The diluted spray is a very different thing, and once it has dried there is very little left for a cat to meet.
Spider Mite Control is 30% geraniol in the bottle and is applied at 1:500, which is 600 ppm in the spray. Mildew Control is 17% at 1:2,000, or 85 ppm. Nematode Control is 2.5% at 1:1,000, or 25 ppm. Those figures come from the registered labels.
Why cats specifically
Cats process the aromatic compounds in essential oils more slowly than most mammals. They lack adequate activity of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, the enzyme pathway mammals principally use to conjugate and excrete phenolic and terpenoid compounds. With that pathway impaired, terpenes accumulate rather than clear, so a dose a dog would eliminate can build up in a cat. This is a species difference in metabolism, not a matter of dose sensitivity or body weight, and it is why guidance written for dogs does not transfer.
It is also why advice written for cats is deliberately conservative. That caution is aimed at concentrated oils, not at a spray diluted five hundred to two thousand times.
What exposure looks like
Exposure does not require ingestion. Essential oils are absorbed readily across the gastrointestinal tract, the skin, the lungs and the mucous membranes, and grooming compounds it, because anything on the coat or paws is then swallowed.
Reported signs of essential-oil toxicosis in cats range from vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, reduced appetite and skin irritation through to tremors, low blood pressure, bradycardia, hypothermia, seizures, hind-limb weakness, and hepatic or renal failure. These reports concern concentrated oils and direct application, not diluted foliar residues.
What to do
The concentrate: treat it as you would any concentrate. Keep it closed, stored away from pets and out of reach. Do not let a cat near an open container, a spill, or unrinsed equipment.
The diluted spray: keep pets off treated foliage until the spray has dried. This is ordinary practice for any foliar application and it removes the question entirely. Never apply a geraniol or peppermint-oil product to a cat, and do not use these products as a flea, mite or tick treatment on an animal. Some third-party products do market geraniol for veterinary use on cats; the metabolic evidence argues against it, and Vegalab's position is that no product on this platform is for on-animal use. All three products are exempt from EPA registration under FIFRA 25(b), the minimum-risk pesticide provision, and geraniol is on the permitted active ingredient list for that exemption; the signal word on all three labels is CAUTION.
